A brief biography

A life in Michigan

George was born in Horley, the youngest of nine children of Isaac Risbridger and his wife Ann. He married Sabina when she was 18 and almost immediately embarked to America where he and his elder brother William spent the rest of their lives. George and Sabina landed in New York in the end of May, and spent the next three years in Portage Co., Ohio where he worked in a potash and pearl-ash plant. After that a year in Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, then he moved thirty miles north to Barry County where his elder brother William farmed.

There he bought 80 acres of unimproved land, built a house and cleared 70 acres, setting out an orchard of 150 trees. After a residence of 15 years he sold his place and bought 200 acres of well improved land in Bedford, Calhoun County, 15 miles south east of Barry County, where he resided 13 years. Again disposing of his place, he moved a hundred miles north to Mecosta County and bought 40 acres of partially improved land, where he spent the rest of his life.

Sabina died aged 49 and George married again 15 years later to Emma, he was now 74 and she was 42.
